Functional Testing FAQ
What does functional testing measure? Who is it for? And how can it support a personalized health plan? Here, I answer the most common questions I get about functional lab testing and how it can fit into a proactive approach to prevention, longevity, and healthy aging.
-
Functional testing takes a whole-body approach, typically looking at different body systems at the same time and using narrower, more optimal ranges than conventional care. The goal is to identify patterns and imbalances before they potentially show up as a formal diagnosis at your doctor’s office, using diet and lifestyle as the main tools for change.
Routine conventional medical care is essential for screening and diagnosis, but it usually looks at whether labs fall within a broad “normal” range, which doesn’t always mean optimal. This is why people can be told everything looks normal and still not feel well.
Integrative and functional wellness is less about asking “is something wrong?” and more about “how can your body work better?” It’s also less about finding a drug or supplement for a symptom and more about uncovering what may be driving that symptom in the first place, often called a root-cause approach.

I work alongside conventional care, not instead of it. Your physician is essential for diagnosing and managing disease and urgent care. My role as a functional and integrative wellness practitioner is different: I look at how your diet and lifestyle interact with your health, using functional labs to identify imbalances that routine testing may not fully explain.
Many clients keep their doctor and add me to their team for what conventional visits don’t have time to cover. You can see how this shows up across each of my care packages.

Men and women focused on preventive health, longevity, healthy aging, and health optimization can benefit from functional nutrition and testing.
These are people who want to proactively support their health, maintain or improve their quality of life, and get ahead of potential health problems.
Many of my clients also come to me for extra support with unexplained fatigue, low energy, brain fog, cravings, weight gain, sleep issues, PCOS, prediabetes, insulin resistance, and blood sugar control.
Others are dealing with digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or acid reflux, or have concerns about declining testosterone, perimenopause, or menopause and want more personalized guidance around the diet, lifestyle and supplementation strategies that may support them during these stages.

The DUTCH Test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is one of the core functional labs I use to evaluate hormone health.
Unlike a standard blood panel, this urine and saliva test looks at hormone metabolites and cortisol patterns across the day, providing an additional perspective on hormone metabolism, cortisol and stress response, sleep issues, mood swings, and fatigue.
The DUTCH Plus Hormone Test is included in all my testing packages.
-
Gut microbiome tests like GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus), Gut Zoomer, and Tiny Health use comprehensive stool testing to assess gut health at a microbial level. Depending on the test, this can include pathogenic bacteria, parasites, yeast, viruses, and markers related to digestive function, inflammation, and intestinal barrier health, sometimes called “leaky gut.”
Gut health can interact with many seemingly unrelated symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog, skin concerns, and hormone imbalances. I use comprehensive stool testing when symptoms or history suggest that looking more closely at the gut could be useful.
You can find stool testing included in my core testing packages.

Yes. I offer environmental toxin testing, including Total Tox Burden testing as part of my Deep Health package, which looks at biomarkers related to heavy metals, mycotoxin (mold-related), and environmental toxin exposure.
It’s not something I run for every client. I use it when environmental exposure is a genuine consideration based on your history and symptoms.
If you’re concerned about toxins, heavy metals, or mold exposure, we’ll discuss whether testing makes sense for you during your onboarding session, and I’ll always be upfront about what a given lab can and can’t tell us before you invest in it.
-
Beyond gut and hormone testing, I draw from a range of functional tests depending on your needs and goals.
That can include toxin exposure testing (discussed above), micronutrient testing through Vibrant Wellness to identify nutritional gaps and help personalize diet and supplementation; immune reactivity testing such as Wheat Zoomer; and SIBO breath testing to assess hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide production associated with small intestinal microbial overgrowth.
I don’t run every test on everyone. As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, my job is to help you choose the labs that best address your specific questions.

Routine labs are essential, but they don’t always explain why you still feel like something is wrong.
It’s possible to still have digestive, hormonal, metabolic, or energy-related symptoms even when routine labs fall within normal ranges. Functional testing adds another layer of information alongside your symptoms and conventional lab results, helping us look at an interconnected picture of your body to build a more personalized, actionable plan.

GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic can be very effective for some, but diet & lifestyle play an essential role in preserving muscle mass, supporting adequate protein intake and nutrient density, and creating a sustainable eating plan for long-term health.
I take a whole-body approach to weight management, always including factors like sleep, stress, gut health, and metabolic health. I focus on building sustainable habits that support your health during treatment and after.
-
Functional testing provides additional information about what’s happening in your body; nutrition and lifestyle coaching with smart supplementation are how we act on it.
Once we have your results, I translate them into a realistic plan that fits your life and goals, not a generic “eat clean” checklist. Every care package I offer includes ongoing nutrition and lifestyle coaching sessions so we can adjust as you go and build habits that stick, rather than a one-time report you’re left to interpret alone.

Yes. I work with clients in person in my Bryant Park office in Manhattan, as well as virtually with clients across the country and internationally. Sessions, lab reviews, and follow-ups all happen just as effectively by video as they do in my office, and most of your labs are collected at home wherever you’re located.
This flexibility is part of why functional testing works well for professionals, executives, busy parents and people with limited time, whether you’re local to New York City or joining me from anywhere else.
-
Yes. In fact, most of my clients are professionals, executives, and busy parents who don’t have time to feel depleted.
I built my practice around that reality: sessions can happen by phone or video, labs are collected at home, and your personalized plan is recorded so you can revisit it on your own schedule.
We focus on the changes that will move the needle fastest for someone with a demanding schedule, rather than giving you a long list of overwhelming tasks.
The plan is designed to fit into your life, but remember that meaningful change comes from consistently putting it into practice and requires commitment and effort on your part.

You will go from your first onboarding session to having an actionable plan in hand, typically within four to six weeks, depending on the number and type of tests performed and how long each client takes with sample collection.
Most functional lab results come back within approximately two to three weeks of sample collection. Once results are in, I will need a few days to review them; we then schedule your 1:1 lab session, where I walk you through your data, you ask your questions, and we build your wellness plan together. You’re never left interpreting a report on your own.
